Saimyoji nut hunting

Saimyoji nut hunting

Saimyoji chestnuts are said to have been growing for about 300 years after seeds from Tamba (Kyoto) and Mino Yoro (Gifu) districts were introduced, it is also said that in place of the annual rice tax, payments were made with returns. It is said they are the biggest in Japan, some the size of a baby’s fist. As a matter of fact, plain burnt chestnuts and chestnuts, of course are used for Shibukawani, Japanese sweets, and chestnut shochu.
